Shift psychologists all use the same basic protocol, which is a combination of Bilateral stimulation and cognitive behavioural therapy.  Your psychologist may customize your therapy further, with solution-focused or behavioural therapy add-ons, depending on your therapeutic concerns and goals. It’s nice, because you know what you are getting from the outset, and this allows you to monitor your goals and push towards directed outcomes.

Shift psychological does not officially offer phone consultations, but if you have a question for a Shift Psychologist, we will always find time to chat.  We want you to be comfortable with your choice of psychologist and service.

We’re night hawks! Shift is open until 9 or 10 pm several nights each week.

EMDR is a therapeutic technique developed by Francine Shapiro.  It uses bilateral stimulation of the brain, via eye movements, auditory, tapping or vibration with an integrative therapy approach for the treatment of trauma and disturbance.

Yup.  We work with ages 5 to older than the hills.

Many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Bilateral Stimulation on children with specific concerns. You can call Shift at YEG 780.705.(MIND)6463 or YYC 587.352.(MIND)6463 for more information or to see if Bilateral Stimulation based therapy is right for your child.

The number of spots available, as well as the financial circumstance of the client.  It is important to note that the lowest fee on Shift’s sliding scale is $120/50 minute session. You can call Shift at YEG 780.705.(MIND)6463 or YYC 587.352.(MIND)6463 for more information or to see if you qualify for our discounted sessions.

Your first session is different than any other you will have.  We ask you a ton of questions, which are very to-the-point and directed, so that you are never at a loss for what to say.  We start with “What brings you in today?” and go on to topics like medical history, sleep, family history and end with goal setting (which we help you with) and outlining a treatment plan.  It’s a packed 50 minutes of your history, wish list and present circumstances, but you are always in control and can pass on any question that makes you uncomfortable.  Plus, we always leave time for you to grill us a little on whatever you’d like.

Every client is different, depending on treatment needs and financial circumstance, but typically Shift psychologists see their clients once every week or two.

This is a hard question to answer.  It’s a little bit like asking a personal trainer how long it will take to lose 20 pounds.  It all depends on personal characteristics, how much work you have to do, how often we see you, how hard you work and what kind of a fit our program is for you.  That said, we like to think our results our fast and furious for most of our clients, and tend to attribute this to our structured, outcome-driven therapeutic model.  We don’t have undirected sessions with wandering discussions; there’s a goal for each and every session and we try darn hard to help you reach it.

At Shift, we aren’t into categorizing or getting too diagnosticky with people.  It’s just not our model.  So, here’s how we see it: if you go to a gym to work your body out, does it mean you are fat? Nope.  It just means that you are interested in your physical health.  Think of seeing us in the same way.  Personal trainers for you mind, who help you work it out so that your life gets and stays in fabulous shape.

Well, lots in the first three sessions, and then only as much as you want in the following ones.  Let me explain.  Shift psychologists start with the intake (us asking questions,) then do two mindfulness CBT activities which are pretty structured, and then we move into our reprocessing.  The reprocessing stage (the biggest part of therapy,) takes the longest and can be done with barely any talking (like, say if you are working on something you’re shy about,) or heaps of talking (if you’re someone who works things out, out-loud.)  Either way you like it, we can serve it up, with no pressure to jump out of your comfort zone at all.

At Shift, all of the psychologists are trained in the same approach and each has to demonstrate their ability to expertly execute this protocol on senior psychological staff before they can even start to use it with clients.  Our training is extensive which is why we are able to offer such a consistent level and type of service, within our great selection of psychologists.  So, go ahead and try out our recommendation; we’ll be surprised if you’re not a fan.

At Shift, we want you to be over the moon about your experience, so of course you can! In fact, if you tell us a little bit about your concern or fit issue, we will be happy not only to give you a different psychologist, but also a discounted transfer session.  Oh, and the other great thing about our approach is, that no session time is lost when you start over with another person.  It’s as seamless as can be, with you picking up right where you left off.

We regret to inform you that our Edmonton location on 124th Street is not wheelchair accessible. Our Calgary location in Shoppes at the Devenish on 17th Street and 8th Ave does have elevator access to the 3rd floor but would be difficult to get up the main set of stairs with a wheelchair as well.

This may sound like a strange question but our owner is a BIG bird lover and often brings her African Grey Parrot and Senegal Parrot to the shop in Edmonton. There are some people who have come in with a bit of a “Bird Phobia” but they find out that birds(at least ours) are not so scary at all! No charge if that used to be your Phobia! 😉
