In this age of the internet, we can see porn as being a healthy way to engage in one’s sexuality or enhance a relationship. A way to engage in fantasy. But what happens when the fantasy begins to destroy reality? Porn addiction can ruin relationships, get in the way of goals, decrease the satisfaction of real-world interactions and create avoidance patterns. It can generate feelings of powerlessness and shame, often existing alongside things like anxiety and depression, as well.

At Shift, we look at porn addiction as an outgrowth of dysfunctional needs, stemming from deep-rooted limiting beliefs. Things that we think about ourselves that we attempt to navigate around using distractions and compulsions, such as pornography. However, navigating them results in self-fulfilling prophecies. For example, if someone has the limiting belief that he is “unlovable”, then engaging in excessive porn use which his wife detests, will create a circumstance in which this belief is realized. Common limiting beliefs implicated in porn addiction are: I am shameful, I am less then and I am not in control. When the origin of dysfunctional behaviors is addressed it doesn’t have cause to return when healthy managed.

A benefit to Shifts therapy for porn addiction is that much of the reprocessing can occur in the clients mind – we avoid the secondary disturbance of having to detail exploits. We want to avoid re-shaming. Also, it doesn’t affect the results. Clients can still achieve a healthy perspective on sexuality, control of their porn usage and develop on set of adaptive satisfiers.
