THE BASICS

What is your name/nicknames?

I was born two months premature and my parents had not decided on a name yet. I was named after the nurse who helped deliver me. The people in my life are not creative or maybe I hate nicknames, most people just call me Bridgette. A few call me Bridgey but that is an earned honour. My most loved nickname is Aunty.

What do you do at Shift?

I am a Provisional Psychologist at Shift YYC. I have the privilege of working with adults and couples. I’m passionate about working with clients who experience: high functioning anxiety and depression, imposter syndrome, grew up with narcissistic parent(s), self-esteem issues, perfectionism, and overall self-improvement.

What are your academic credentials?

Formally, I have a BSc in Psychology and a Masters in Counselling Psychology. I also enjoy reading or listening to a podcast related to all things promoting better mental health.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I do! We have cats (brother and sisters) that were rescued as kittens. Then there is Nikko, he is our Siberian Husky puppy. He is the centre of our family and my heart (haha cheesy but true). Just look at him:

Specialty Populations/Issues:

Helping individuals overcome anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, self-esteem issues, grief and loss, as well as family of origin concerns.

THE RANDOM

What is your favourite food?

My favourite food tends to change. Of course pizza, nachos, shawarma and Chinese are always great treats. I enjoy cooking and trying to eat cleanly. Lately, the food I have craved the most is Vietnamese.

What is a skill you are working on currently?

Focus and purpose. I tend to be a person with many ideas and aspirations. Sometimes I lose focus and try and do too much at once or over analyze things and lose motivation. (My anxious/perfectionism is showing.) This year I’m working on doing all things with focus and purpose.

What do you do in your spare time?

A big chunk of my spare time is spent walking/hiking with Nikko. I enjoy going with friends, my husband, the husky group, or alone. I enjoy spending time outdoors, as well as reading and relaxing at home.

What is your dream car?

To be honest, can’t say I have one. For many years I wanted to eventually build my own custom Harley Davidson Motorcycle.

What is your go-to for a good laugh?

I laugh easily and often. I regularly laugh with clients, friends, my husband, and of course Nikko. Funny guilty pleasure: Americas funniest home videos style clips with animals and kiddos.

Tell us about your journey in becoming a psychologist…

At a very young age I knew I wanted to help people. After a life changing trip to Brazil, I realized psychology was going to be how. Initially I worked with children and teens with special needs in various capacities as a front-line staff.  Working at a few different non-profit organizations in the city with children, teens, and adults my passion for psychology and mental health grew.  Before coming to Shift, as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a health clinic I was able to see the complex ways in which our physical and mental health are intertwined.

The community has experienced dramatic changes in the last twenty years. Much of its residential and an increasing proportion of its commercial areas have been redeveloped to accommodate Calgary’s rapid growth. The Area Redevelopment Plan encourages the continuation of this trend in a manner which reflects community and city-wide objectives and fosters medium density residential and commercial development.
