THE BASICS
What is your name/nicknames?
Name is Flora. I never had a nickname. Previously, because folks had a difficult time with my last name (DeFilippo), they called me “Dr D.”
What do you do at Shift?
I am a registered psychologist and I work with adults, including geriatrics. I have a lot of interest in working with people who experience being marginalized by society, e.g., LGBTQ+. In short, I see my work as helping people manage navigating their life/ this world.
What are your academic credentials?
I have a PhD in psychology from Rutgers University in NJ and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the NYU Medical Center/ Brain Injury Treatment Program.
Do you have any pets?
I currently share my life with two Bengal cats, Catsby and Zelda. I have had many dogs, my most recent was Jake, a giant schnauzer. I have done a lot of training of dogs. The cats can’t be bothered.
Specialty Populations/Issues:
My speciality areas include a lot of clinical experience with diagnoses of personality disorders, depression, adjustment to traumatic events, grief/ loss, adjustment to life events, and issues related to self-esteem/self-concept.
THE RANDOM
What is your favourite food?
I would have to say chocolate, in any form.
What is a skill you are working on currently?
Learning to be a good grandparent to my 5 yo grandson.
What do you do in your spare time?
I read for entertainment. I am new to Edmonton and will be exploring means to create a new social circle. I like to spend time with close friends.
What is your dream car?
1965/66 Mustang. I had one when they were not special. I am looking for one now – that car has a lot of good memories attached.
What is your go-to for a good laugh?
I can find humour everywhere. Life is often quite absurd – you have to laugh.
