Like all Shift Psychologists, James is trained in the Shift Protocol, which is the highly effective blending of two well-researched approaches: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Bilateral Stimulation. He works with clients across the lifespan, and particularly enjoys working with youth and adults.

What is your name/nicknames?

I either go by James or Jamie, depending on who I’m chatting with and the situation. Typically, it’s James in Alberta and in professional contexts, and Jamie to family and friends back East.

What do you do at Shift?

I feel super lucky to be working as a Registered Psychologist at Shift YYC! I really dig working with adults and youth and work with couples as well.

What are your academic credentials?

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Sociology, and a Master of Arts in Psychology. I apparently somehow enjoyed all the sleepless nights that came with grad school, as I’m currently working on finishing a Master of Arts in Women and Gender Studies, which is all but the thesis done. Fingers crossed I will be wrapping that up by the end of this year!

Do you have any pets?

Sure do! I have a wonderful husky named Jasper. He loves belly rubs, and works as my alarm clock which can never be turned off — he just howls louder. He does this in exchange for his room and board. I’m still not sure if it’s a fair exchange.

Specialty Populations/Issues:

My speciality areas are repetitive behavior disorders (such as eating disorders, self-harm, obsessive/compulsive disorders), traumatic stress, substance use concerns, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders. I also have extensive experience working with psychosis and bipolar disorder.

What is your favourite food?

If I’m really only allowed one pick here, it’s definitely going to be sushi, because I don’t feel quite so bad after gorging on sushi compared to say… fried chicken or burgers.

What is a skill you are working on currently?

I’m currently working on getting better at rock climbing, and never have I been so sore in parts I didn’t know could get sore on a regular basis.

What do you do in your spare time?

I spend most of my time enjoying the mountains! Activities I really dig are backcountry camping, mountain biking, fishing, snowboarding, and road trips. I also am a member of the Calgary Search and Rescue Association. When I’m not in the mountains, I’m usually hanging out with my dog, spending too much time at Dim Sum restaurants, or wandering around aimlessly at record shops or bookstores most likely with a coffee or tea in hand.

What is your dream car?

Some sort of old SUV with a lot of weird quirks that is also super reliable and has a nifty rooftop tent. I am open to suggestions as to what might fit these criteria!

What is your go-to for a good laugh?

Definitely how my dog reacts when I try to play the guitar.

The community has experienced dramatic changes in the last twenty years. Much of its residential and an increasing proportion of its commercial areas have been redeveloped to accommodate Calgary’s rapid growth. The Area Redevelopment Plan encourages the continuation of this trend in a manner which reflects community and city-wide objectives and fosters medium density residential and commercial development.
