THE BASICS

What is your name/nicknames?

The majority of my friends call me Yena because I made the mistake of telling them the story of how my high school physics teacher mispronounced my name for an entire semester and I was too shy to correct him.

What do you do at Shift?

I am a provisional psychologist at Shift psychological with a passion for working in addictions.

What are your academic credentials?

  • Bachelor of Science with a specialization in Psychology with completion of the Industrial Internship of Psychology (University of Alberta, 2014)
  • Masters of Counselling Psychology (City University of Seattle, 2017)

Do you have any pets?

I could not imagine life without a furry companion by my side. I have a 12-year-old, black lab named Brody. He still has the energy of a puppy and loves to hog the bed.

Who or what inspires you and why?

This may sound weird but my own fears inspire me. Whenever I feel that creeping discomfort from something that is outside of my comfort zone it just makes me want to conquer it. I recently noticed that heights were uncomfortable for me so I went zip lining, bungee jumping and rock climbing and now I’m not as bothered by it. Next, I would love to do some skydiving. A bit of exposure therapy for the soul I suppose.

Specialty Populations/Issues:

My speciality areas are helping individuals overcome depression, anxiety, life transitions, addiction, and stress, as well as shame.

THE RANDOM

What is your favourite food?

I think I’d be cast out of the family if I did not say my Nonna’s (grandma’s) cooking. She makes the best Chicken Parmesan and pasta sauce but I’m sure every Italian would argue that their Nonna’s is better. I’m also a massive sucker for a good bowl of Ramen.

What is a skill you are working on currently?

I am currently working on trying to be more conscious of the waste I produce in order to be more environmentally friendly. Also working on diminishing my screen time so I have more time to read.

What do you do in your spare time?

I am a very high energy person so you can usually catch me in the gym working out or at a Muay Thai or Jiu-Jitsu class. In the summertime, you can find me in the mountains hiking, boating at my favourite lake, or camping with my friends. I also love to wind down by reading books, playing video games or getting together for board game nights with my friends and family.

What is your dream car?

A classic 1970 Dodge Challenger. I saw one in a movie once and have been obsessed ever since.

What is your go-to for a good laugh?

I love to get my friends together to hit up a karaoke bar for the evening. We are by no means good singers but it’s always a good time to get a bit silly.
