Like all Shift Psychologists, Karina is trained in the Shift Protocol, which is the highly effective blending of two well-researched approaches: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Bi-Lateral Stimulation (BLS). Her approach to therapy is trauma-informed, and she also has experience and training in Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, as well as Motivational Interviewing.

What is your name/nicknames?

I have always gone exclusively by my first name, Karina. My name doesn’t seem to shorten easily and I have never had any nicknames that I like. Fun fact about my name: it is spelt the same as a famous Bollywood actress and it is also used as an Egyptian clothing brand (or so I have been told by some of my previous clients).

What do you do at Shift?

I am one of the Registered Psychologists with the YYC Shift team. I typically work 1-on-1 with children, youth, and adults. With that in mind, I am hoping to explore working with couples using the unique and effective couples protocol here at Shift.

What are your academic credentials?

I have a Bachelor’s degree majoring in Psychology. I focused my coursework on developmental psychology, particularly child and youth development. I went on to complete a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology where I broadened my focus to children, youth, and adult counselling. I identify as a lifelong learner and since completion of my formal credentials, I have pursued additional training in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and I will be pursuing level 1 EMDR certification this coming Fall (2019).

Do you have any pets?

I have a dog and she is a Border collie cross with an Aussie Shepard. She really is more like a 3rd child. She is my one and only girl in the family.

Specialty Populations/Issues:

Karina is experienced supporting folks through a variety of stressful life events and transitions. She has particularly enjoyed supporting individuals who have endured mental-health stigma, traumatic experiences, anxiety, depression (including prenatal/postpartum onset), addiction, parenting stress, relational difficulties, attachment disruptions, burnout, compassion fatigue, suicidal ideation, and self-harm. She also has significant experience with folks who have received formal diagnoses, particularly individuals with thought and mood disorders (e.g., psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar, etc.).

What is your favourite food?

I would have to say pizza, especially more authentic Italian kinds. Though I have never been to Italy, trying a slice from the pizza-mother-land is definitely on my bucket list. On that note, I am accepting any and all favourite pizza joint recommendations in the YYC area…

What is a skill you are working on currently?

Moving my body more. Whether it is through sport, hobbies, play, or time outdoors. Lately, I have been doing 5k walks around my community with my partner and kids.

What do you do in your spare time?

Quality time with family and friends ranks high in my books. I also enjoy yoga, reading, hiking, camping, road trips, going to the trampoline park, and watching new series on Netflix.

What is your dream car?

I am not one to fantasize about cars, but I recently upgraded my small beater car to a family-size SUV. I am feeling pretty stoked with the new family whip.

What is your go-to for a good laugh?

Reminiscing on funny moments from my upbringing with siblings, and sarcasm with co-workers, friends and family. I also am known to enjoy a funny Internet meme. I like to connect with others through laughter and I try to find ways to bring humour to each day.

The community has experienced dramatic changes in the last twenty years. Much of its residential and an increasing proportion of its commercial areas have been redeveloped to accommodate Calgary’s rapid growth. The Area Redevelopment Plan encourages the continuation of this trend in a manner which reflects community and city-wide objectives and fosters medium density residential and commercial development.
