When you think about your upcoming week, how do you feel? Excited? Anticipatory? Or worried? Stressed? For many of us, the struggle of trying to maintain a successful career and a happy, fulfilling life can feel difficult, or even downright impossible. So what do we do?

Think about the last time you said “no” to someone. Can’t remember when that was? You might think that the problem is that you’re saying “yes” to too many things – but it’s not! You’re simply saying “yes” to things that you don’t want to do. While we can’t shirk off work responsibilities (as much as we’d like to), we do have the power to decide for ourselves when something is just not worth it. So the next time your best friend begs you to help organize her boyfriend’s birthday party, and you’re not a huge fan of his – don’t do it! You’ll be surprised at how much free time you’ll have. And if you get the opportunity to take on an extra project at work, consider just how important it is for you to be involved. If it’s at the expense of your mental health, it’s probably not worth it.

If it still feels all too much, or you still find yourself taking on more than you can handle, give us a call. Talking with a counsellor can help you to work through what is causing you to behave this way, and find ways to help you feel empowered to say “no.”
